Food Donations
Please don't forget to donate veg and fruit this Saturday 9-12am at the Potton and Biggleswade Allotments, for our veg boxes which are delivered free of charge on Saturday afternoon to those suffering financial hardship in our communities.
The badgers got in to our sweetcorn at the allotment this week (see photo), expertly removing the cobs from the plants, shredding the leaves back and munching the sweet, juicy kernels. They absolutely love corn, and it is very difficult to keep these intelligent animals out as they always find a way. Badgers can't be accused of eating unhealthily: besides sweetcorn, they eat earthworms, slugs, beetles, wasp grubs, frogs, young rabbits and mice, bluebell bulbs, as well as fruit and nuts ??.
Hopefully we will still have a few for the veg boxes this week. They are deliciously sweet when boiled in salt water and eaten with a pat of butter.
Is sweetcorn a healthy addition to your diet? Absolutely! Corn is a staple food in many countries. "One of the main nutritional benefits of sweetcorn is its high fibre content. And as we know, dietary fibre is important for our health: it aids digestion, it can decrease the risk of heart disease, strokes, type 2 diabetes and bowel cancer. On top of that, fibre helps you stay fuller for longer." It is also rich in Vitamins B1, B9 and C, and magnesium and potassium.*
So enjoy a delicious, healthy sweetcorn cob while they are in season, and watch out for marauding badgers!
